CROSSROADS 2.0 ARCHEOLOGICAL EXCATAVIONS

International group of archaeologists from Gdańsk, Klaipeda, Vilnus and Kaliningrad work in city forest in Olsztyn (Warmia and Mazury Region, Poland) on the excavations in the framework of project CROSROADS 2.0 (Lagoons as crossroads for tourism and interaction of peoples of South-East Baltic: from the history to present). Resumption of works after seven years break was possible with funding of the project by the European Union under the 2007-2013 Lithuania-Poland-Russia ENPI CBC Programme .


The excavations started on May 2013 on the place called: Enchanted Castle on the bank of the river Lyna in Olsztyn. In that place are found the remains of settlement what existence was known from the XIX century. The city forest from the centuries covered the place and has enabled to preserve it. Till now there are found three Arabic coins in very good condition (originating form Bagdad) dated on 2.5 thousand years B.C. probable sent to the Baltic by Vikings. Moreover archeologist found ceramics, flint and other everyday items. Next step of researches will be to excavate more expanse to expose and asses the structure and character of settlement. It is still a secret why the residents left the settlement – was it for the purpose of a fire, invasion or just relocation? Perhaps further research will answer on that question.

In near future it is plan to start next CROSSROADS 2.0 researches in Kaliningrad Oblast on cemetery in Kaup.
