Lithuania-Poland-Russia ENPI Cross-border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013 BW


On the 30th of April 2014 in the framework of the Project “CROSSROADS 2.0” – “Lagoons as crossroads for tourism and ineraction of peoples of South-East Baltic: from the history to present” being implemented in the framework of the Lithuania-Poland-Russia ENPI CBC Programme 2007-2013 an opening of the open-air museum of the Viking Age “Ancient Sambia” took place. The concept of the museum appeared in 2005 in the I. Kant Baltic Federal University (Kaliningrad, Russia). In the meantime the technical documentation for construction of the museum in the National Park “Curonian Spit” was prepared.

The first stage of the museum creation was the construction of the interactive children’s play area and “Time line”. The museum “Ancient Sambia” is a historical reconstruction of a settlement (by analogy with Kaup village in Zelenogradskiy region). Visitors will be able to experience the history of the region they live in. The museum will be equipped with samples of the ancient housewear. It will show the way of lifing in ancient times on the territory of current Lithuania, Poland and Kaliningrad region neighboring with Curonian and Vistula lagoons. This summer in the framework of the Project a mini festival “The days of ancient handicrafts” will be organized. Masters of ancient crafts (IX-XI centuries) from Poland, Lithuania and Russia will participate in this event and show the living history. Visitors will be given an opportunity to make things with their own hands under the supervision of the craftsmen.
